Did you know that there are 88 pianos located on streets, in parks, on boardwalks and in community centers all over the city - including the Kennedy Center? Well, at our last meeting, Ms. Emma (our Troop Mother) noticed one of them!
Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos celebrate the vision that all New Yorkers have access to the arts. Each one of the 88 pianos were painted by a Sing for Hope volunteer who shares the mission of bringing the arts to all. During the June and July of last year, performances took place on the pianos by Broadway stars, local songwriters, and ballerinas. These individuals share one thing: a desire to give back through their art, and to unite artists with their local communities. After the project ended, the pianos were donated. The 2011 Sing for Hope Pop-Up Pianos, inspired by British artist Luke Jerram, was the world’s largest street piano installation to date, and reached over two million people.
