Meeting #8: Celebrating Women's History Month (VIDEO)

This meeting celebrated Women's History Month!  We began by acknowledging the 103rd year anniversary of Girl Scouts of America and it's founder Juliet Gordon Low!  "Over 103 years ago, Juliet Gordon Low showed how courageous and strong she was by creating the first national organization for girls", said Miss Donna (Education Coordinator).   "The Girl Scouts of America continues to promote courage and today we'll meet two women who are excellent examples of strength who will speak to us about the careers they love".

Troop #3027 focused on women in music!  The girls discussed women who they listen to and admire like Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Keke Palmer.  "Alicia Keys sing songs with a message", said Junior Girl Scout Makayla.  "It takes courage to have songs with a message".   Guest Speaker Dionee Harper, Vice President of Marketing at Atlantic Records spoke about making sure people show you respect and shared some of the challenges of being a women in a male-dominated industry.  "There are some people who don't want to listen to you, just because you're a woman", she said.  "You have to work twice as hard".   Miss Aisha, a professional dancer, contortionist and choreographer who has danced with Cirque Zuma Zuma shared her love of dancing and created a special dance routine for our girls to learn.  "Now put a little funk in it", she told the girls as they learned the choreography.   Following the dance routine, troop members had the opportunity to speak to Miss Aisha.  "I like dancing", said Junior Scout D'lorian.  "I've been dancing since I was three".

African Dance with Brother Jerome

At a recent Girl Scout meeting, our troop members, including Miss Stacey, learned an African dance routine through the expertise of instructor Brother Jerome Hunter!

Bro. Jerome is the director of The Larocque Bey School of Dance Theatre, Inc., founded nearly 51 years ago! All levels of ballet, tap, African, and modern dance classes are held at the Kennedy Center on Saturdays (click here for a schedule).

The girls learned the importance stretching, exercising and loving yourself. Thank you, Bro. Jerome, for a great class and important life lessons!


    

African Dance

Learning a dance routine can be difficult, but at our last meeting the girls did a great job remembering all of the dance steps taught by Brother Jerome, Executive & Artistic Director of Loroque Bey Dance Theatre.  The photos below show how skilled our girls are at African Dance!

Let's Dance!

At our next meeting, the girls of Troop #3027 will be taking an African dance class! African dances consists of arm and feet movements that tell a story. Africans perform these dances during wars, harvest season, special occasions, work and as a form of praise. Tribal Africans teach their children to dance to the beat of a drum at a very young age. The children perform these dances in order to keep their culture alive and to commemorate their ancestors.
