Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

The members of Troop #3027 always take the opportunity to acknowledge phenomenal women.  This Mother's Day we wanted to take the opportunity to thank the most important woman in all of our lives...the woman we call "Mom". At our most recent meeting, the girls showed their love by writing letters, creating cards, decorating flower pots and planting flowers...all for Mom.  On behalf of Troop #3027, thank you Mom.  This is for you (click play)...

Arts & Crafts: Picture Frames

Everyone knows that Girl Scouts raise money for their troop by selling Girl Scout cookies.  But, did you know that troop members also learn a lot about setting goals, helping those in need and being creative?  Girl Scouts earn badges for each task they complete.  Take a look at the slideshow below to see how creative our girls are, as they earn a badge decorating picture frames!

We Did It!

This cookie season, Troop #3027 sold over 60 cases of cookies! That's more than 100 more boxes than last year! Special thanks to all of the parents and families of our Girl Scouts that worked so hard to sell cookies.

This week, the girls spent time creating cards, signs and flyers in preparation for our "Community Cookie Sale"! On April 2nd, from 2pm-4pm (weather permitting), we will be selling Girl Scout cookies to members of the Harlem community outside of the Kennedy Community Center. No pre-orders will be taken, but all our welcome to support our troop on Saturday, April 2nd!

Girls Just Want To Have Fun!

Besides loving the color pink, Hello Kitty stickers, and the latest fashion, the girls of Troop #3027 enjoy making things and decorating! Troop leaders, including Troop Mother Emma, organize materials for craft and baking activities done during each meeting. This Week's Theme: Resolutions

"In 2011, I promise to help my Mom clean, cook, and shop", says birthday girl Cassidy. At this troop meeting, the girls made a list of goals that they would like to accomplish during the year. "Sometimes, all we have to do is make changes to something old in order to make it new", said Miss Donna at the beginning of circle-time. "For snack, you made regular cupcakes better by decorating them in your own, new way. Today you're going to list 4-6 things that you will try to do better in 2011".

During snack (provided by our newest volunteer, Miss Kandes), the girls discussed goals that they would like the troop to accomplish in 2011. Here's the list:

1. Do more gardening or planting (suggested by Khaliah).
   
2. Make more clothing or food donations (suggested by Kendra).
3. Sell more Girl Scout Cookies than last year (suggested by Yaniece).
4. Help people in our community (suggested by Kira).
5. Help each other (suggested by Kori).

After snack, the girls used index cards to and wrote down their individual resolutions. Then they decorated each card and tied them together with a pink ribbon to make a "Resolution Ring". These booklets were sent home so each girl could "check off" each goal that they accomplish.

It's All About Me!

At today's meeting, each girl was given time to share information about themselves. After Circle Time, Dasies met with Miss Donna to discuss parts of the Girl Scout Promise written in our Activity Books. "I say sorry to my friends", said Kori during a discussion on what it means to be considerate. Miss Shevy and Miss Regina gave the Brownies a chance to share their thoughts and feelings. Miss Stacey and Miss Jodi allowed the Cadettes and Juniors to talk about things they like to do.

Journals were the activity for the day! Each girl was given five sheets of colored oak tag paper, pencils, markers, and tons of stickers! They wrote sentences and drew pictures about:

1. their favorite subjects in school
2. their favorite things to do at home
3. what they like to do outside
4. how they would describe themselves (personality page)

The girls were told to bring photographs to add to their journals at our next meeting.

The Girls Celebrate Native American Culture

Welcome back, girls! Today was our first meeting and we were all happy to see each other. New Daisy Scout, Kori, wanted us to know that new friends are important to her. "I like playing with my friends", says Kori during circle-time. The girls were asked to share something they enjoyed doing last year and want to do this year. "We are planning some fun trips for you", said Troop Leader Donna, "and we need your help". After a snack of cheese, crackers, juice and grapes, the girls came up with some great ideas for trips. They were told to bring more ideas to our next meeting.

Troop Leader Regina organized and led the girls in creating a Native American Headdress. To make this beautiful head piece, the girls used:

• beads
• tape
  
• crayons/markers
• large feathers
• poster board
• lanyard (or string)
  

The girls were told that the correct way to describe people that culturally wear this type of headdress is 'Native American'. It's important to have respect for everyone and call them by the name they prefer. The girls had a great time modeling their cultural creations!

After the art lesson, the girls reviewed the day's lessons and repeated the Girl Scout Promise:

"On my honor, I will try to serve God, my country, mankind and live by the Girl Scout Law".
