The photo of the week was taken by Miss Donna during our annual holiday party!  Brownie Girl Scout Charis is always excited about the many activities that we do during meetings.  But, creating two beautiful looking ornaments really brought out the big smiles.  Happy Holidays!

Meeting #2: Using Resources Wisely

Every Girl Scout ends their meeting with a promise to follow the Girl Scout Law.  Part of the law promises to use resources wisely.  We do that by recycling, reusing and reducing our usage of things that we use every day (ex: water, paper, electricity).  At this meeting, members of Troop #3027 created a bag our of a plain white t-shirt.   Recycling or "up-cycling" is one way to reuse an old t-shirt!

Meeting #1: Creating a Vision Board

At our first meeting of the new season, the 30 members of Troop #3027 created their very own vision board!  "This is a strategy", said Miss Donna, "is a tool used by phenomenal women like Oprah Winfrey".  A vision board is a collage of images, pictures and affirmations of your dreams and all of the things that make you happy. It can also be called a dream board, treasure map or vision map. Vision boards can help you feel positive in reaching and accomplishing your goals.

With magazines, glue stick, a manilla folder and a pair of scissors, troop members were able to put their visions on paper.  Many girls cut out photographs of successful women, like First Lady Michelle Obama, Queen Latifah, Wendy Williams, Tia Mowry and Oprah Winfrey.  They also found pictures of fashionable clothes or creative hairstyles that they liked.  Elaysia, a 1st grade Daisy Girl Scout who loves recess, shared her vision board with her Girl Scout sisters!  "In the future, I want to drive and do my own hair", she said.  "I also want to be a writer".

Spring Fling Preparations!

Members of Troop #3027 get ready for the Spring Fling.

The members and leaders of Troop #3027 have been preparing for our Spring Fling taking place in less than one week!  We have invited members of the Harlem community, friends, classmates and family members to attend our fundraising event.  Boys and girls that attend will enjoy a bouncy house, face painting, a caricature artist, arts and crafts, Girl Scout Cookies, a live DJ, contests, raffles and much more!

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Girl Scouts Lia, Sabine, Jadda and 6yr old Daisy Scout Julia take a moment to appreciate Mom.

The members of Troop #3027 always take the opportunity to acknowledge phenomenal women.  This Mother's Day we wanted to take the opportunity to thank the most important woman in all of our lives...the woman we call "Mom". At our most recent meeting, the girls showed their love by writing letters, creating cards, decorating flower pots and planting flowers...all for Mom.  On behalf of Troop #3027, thank you Mom.  This is for you (click play)...

A Kid-Friendly Gingerbread Cookie Recipe

During our 'Holiday Meeting', members of Troop #3027 decorated gingerbread cookies!  Here is a kid-friendly recipe for you to create and decorate your own!  Happy Holidays!

Prep Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Cook Time: 8 minutes

Makes: 2 dozen cookies

 

Ingredients:

• 3/4 C PACKED Dark Brown Sugar
• 1 stick (1/2 C) butter, softened
• 2 Eggs
• 1/4 C Molasses
• 3 3/4 C sifted, all purpose flour
• 2 1/4 tsp ground ginger
• 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions:

1. Measure out 3 1/2 C of all purpose flour and sift into a bowl. Spoon the flour into measuring cup(s) do NOT PACK!! Once you have 3 3/4 C flour measured out, pour it into a separate bowl and add in the nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Sift these ingredients together until fully combined and set aside.
2. In your stand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until thoroughly combined, add in the eggs and molasses and mix until fully incorporated.
3. Add the dry ingredients 1 C at a time until it's all been added and mixed in. You may have to forgo the mixer and use a wooden spoon.
4. Remove the dough from the bowl and wrap in plastic wrap; place in the fridge until firm, about 45 minutes.
5. Pre-heat the oven to 350°F
6. Remove the dough from the fridge and let sit while you line cookie sheets with parchment paper, flour your work surface lightly and dust your rolling pin with flour.
7. Using 1 C of dough at at time, roll the dough out on your floured surface until it's 1/8 to 1/4" thick - depends on you.
8. Use your favorite cookie cutter, cut out your gingerbread and place on parchment lined cookie sheets.
9. Bake about 8 minutes, or until they just begin to brown on the edges.
10. Place on wire racks to cool.
11. Use your favorite icing!

Photo of the Week: November 16th Meeting

Photo of the week was captured by Miss Donna as Charis (new Daisy Girl Scout) models a bag and dress that she designed.  With support from guest speaker and professional clothing designer Kellia Rogers, Charis was able to create a dress out of a men's, large t-shirt!  Rip the runway, Charis!

A Visit From Fashion Designers

At our last meeting, we designed fashionable shirts with special guest designers Nicole Parrish and Kellia Rogers!  Both women have designed for clothing companies like Jordache, Apple Bottoms and Pastries.  They encouraged our girls to be courageous and strong.  They reminded the girls of the importance of going to college.  After discussing fashion, our special guests showed our young designers some tricks to make a simple t-shirt look fabulous!  From bows and beads to sparkle and style, our girls were able to continue show their creativity by designing their own t-shirts.

Troop #3027 Uses Resources Wisely

At our last meeting we discussed ways to show rules of the Girls Scout Law!  Our girls are great and know how to be friendly and kind.  At this meeting, we focused on using resources wisely.  "Here in New York City, we know how to separate our plastic, metal and glass from the rest of our garbage so it can be recycled or used again, "said Miss Donna.  "today we're going to show you how you can reuse an old t-shirt".  Miss Stacey and Miss Jodi showed us all how to take an old t-shirt and make it into a beautiful new bag!
