Let's Party!

We were so excited to start another eventful year for Girl Scout Troop #3027, we wanted to begin the year with a 'Welcome Back' party!  Since we have a fair number of new girls, this meeting was used to allow the girls to get to know each other. We discussed what it means to be a Girl Scout and the history of the troop.  We even had a bridging ceremony for those girls moving to the next level, a scavenger hunt, games and food!  Special thanks to parents who donated food items to make our party complete!

Girl Scout of the Week

Kaelyn is a Brownie with a passion and she is our Girl Scout of the Week!  She recently brought nearly fifty pounds of pennies to donate to Pennies for Patients; a campaign that supports individuals with leukemia and lymphoma (blood cancers).  "I'm so proud of her", said her Mom.  "She did this all by herslelf".  As Kaelyn called her family members and friends to inform them about the cookie sales, she also told them to bring her pennies. 

Not too long ago, a family member close to Kaelyn, was diagnosed with cancer.  This motivated Kaelyn to make this cause a priority.  Statistics state that 1 in 75 men and women will be diagnosed with leukemia during their lifetime.  With the help of Kaelyn, Troop #3027 is doing their part to support those that have been affected by this disease.

Meet Our Girl Scouts: Lia R.

Daisy Girl Scout, Lia R.

The Girl Scout of the Week is Lia!  She is a Daisy and a first grader at Harlem Success Academy.  She enjoys math, science, technology and karate!  But, what she really loves to do is sing.

Lia was chosen to be the Girl Scout of the Week because of her philanthropic spirit!  She knows what it means to make a donate your time, talents and treasures for the common good.  She donated more than eight inches of her hair to Locks of Love; an organization that creates wigs for cancer patients.  "When I got my hair cut, I cried", says Lia about her experience, "but, after that, I felt good".   Lia's Mom was inspired to give to the organzation after her family lost a good friend to cancer.

We appreciate your young spirit of giving, Lia!  Troop #3027 is proud of you!

Meet Our Girl Scouts: Makayla C.

Our Girl Scout of the week is 7-year old Makayla C.! Makayla is a second grader at PS/IS 210 in Harlem. Her teacher is Ms Lydia. Her favorite subject in school is reading and her favorite character to read about is Amelia Bedelia. "She's funny", says Makayla when asked to describe this popular children's book character, "she does the wrong things! One time, she tied pieces of steak to leaves...I was giggling". Although Makayla likes to watch Pictureka on HUB, play tag and dance with her friends Jasmine and Maya, her favorite thing to do is play Wii at her grandmother's house! She also likes to go to Six Flags.

When Makayla grows up, she would like to be a famous model or clothing designer. "I want to be a clothing designer because everybody wants to buy your clothes", she says. When asked if there is anything that she wants blog readers to know about her, Makayla replies, "I really like my family, my school and my friends". Special thanks goes to Makayla, her Mom and brother for being active supporters of Troop #3027. Troop leaders would like to congratulate you for being the Girl Scout of the Week!

Meet Our Girl Scouts: Tenae

The Girl Scout of the Week is Tenae! Tenae is a third grader in Mr. Timberlake's class at Harlem Success Academy 1. Her favorite subject is math. When asked why math is her favorite subject, Tenae says, "because I like to add and I'm good at it!".

Although she still likes to swim, Tenae once had a bad experience in an Atlanta pool! "I almost drowned playing tag", she says,"and I was so scared". She also likes to play XBox with her cousins and watch new television shows. Tenae likes comedies! When she grows up, she wanted to be a firefighter. Since that job is very dangerous, she has decided to become a chef! "I can cook bacon by myself and I like cooking for guests".

Meet Our Girl Scouts: Celeste

The Girl Scout of the Week is Celeste! Celeste has been with Troop #3027 for two years and is a 5th grader at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic School in Harlem. "My favorite subject is social studies because it's about history...especially Black History", says Celeste, "Also, geography tells you about how the land was formed". Celeste's grades are excellent and she looks forward to going into the 6th grade, next year.

Celest's favorite color is blue. Her favorite activities are singing and watching TV. Her favorite shows are Adventure Time on Cartoon Network and Wizards of Waverly Place on the Disney Channel. Her friends Zanaiya and Asia would describe Celeste as funny, smart, pretty and creative. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Celeste says, " I want to be a lawyer because I like discussing and arguing".
